The Summer Internship Program provides students with the following opportunities:
- Advanced professionally oriented Japanese language study (3 credits)
Students take this course at the beginning of the program to further develop their language skills with new vocabulary, phrasing and honorific language appropriate for the workplace.
- 9-week internship based on the student's career interests
Internships are available in a variety of different fields, including business, education, government, and more. Interns will be expected to contribute to the best of their ability in a Japanese-language environment. Ability to earn internship credit will vary by college and additional coursework may be required; arrangements should be made prior to the program.
- Internship meeting with JCMU staff and Japanese faculty
Students will participate in regular meetings at JCMU to further understand and interpret their experiences. Reflective activities will push students to evaluate their professional development and expand their understanding of Japanese language and culture.
Students will live in a combination of JCMU housing and other accommodations depending on their internship placements. Student apartments are designed for double occupancy with two private bedroom and a shared living space. JCMU will arrange short- and long-term homestays with families based on family availability, student preferences and internship location. Transportation costs between the housing location on the internship placement are covered by the program fee.
