Due to the intense standards set by professors for the Deformable Solids class I took in Madrid, I learned how to study, complete homework before the deadline, attend study hours and office hours.

Due to the rigorous standards, it seemed impossible to go out and explore while studying for both engineering classes and a Spanish language class. Yet I did. After a few days of adapting to the time change and learning how to work with the new schedule, I was able to explore different parts of the city going from neighborhood parts to more touristy parts.

For part of the program we went to Toledo, Spain which was a fantastic place to learn more about the history of Spain. We saw some of their old churches along with the murals and architectures within the churches. We also learned more about the history of how Toledo no longer the capital was and how it moved to Madrid instead.

A different trip that we did, that I really enjoyed, we hiked a trail where we were able to see an old and original stone bridge that give us a wonderful view of the forest.

Another fun experience, separate from the study abroad program itinerary, was a trip to Madrid, Spain to visit my cousin’s friends that she made from her study abroad. It was nice to be shown around Madrid with her during my free time.

One thing that did stick out to me was the I had a conversation with one of the ladies that takes care of the building asking me what I was studying in and where I am from originally. It stuck out the me because she asked questions that not many people had asked from the dormitory.

Coming from Detroit to Madrid was a fun and unique experience to learn more about the culture in Spain while also exploring Spain in my free time and giving me the unique experience of traveling alone in a foreign country, making new friends, learning how to adapt all while having classes.
