Japan is routinely recognized as one of the safest countries in the world. This course will explore both the criminal justice system and the culture of Japan that contribute to that recognition.

  • Length: ~3 weeks (May 7 - 27, 2025; See Academic Calendar)
  • Credits: 3
  • Location(s): Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
  • Housing: JCMU Residence Hall
  • Eligibility: Min. GPA of 2.5 (cumulative); Completion of at least two semesters of college-level undergraduate enrollment before participation (see Eligibility page for more details)
  • Prerequisites: None - Open to all majors; No Japanese language study required

Program Description

  • (3 credits) Criminal Justice Keystone Course: Subject to availability, the program will visit various criminal justice entities, including policing organizations, courts, a prison, and a juvenile detention center. The class will also visit an elementary school to explore the Japanese education system and its relation to social control and culture.
