MSHSE Program Details - 2019

Application process

Applicants must submit a completed application form (along with the other documents outlined in the application cover sheet):

Important dates:

  • Application deadline: March 8, 2019
  • Student & Parent Orientation (mandatory): April 14, 2019

Program costs

Billable costs

Total billable costs: approximately $2,205 (will vary depending on final airfare taxes and surcharges)

  • Program fee: $350 (includes housing, most meals, ground transportation in Japan, orientation, and international health insurance)
    • Due as two payments made to MSU (cash, check, or money order):
      • Payment 1: $250 (due May 3, 2019)
      • Payment 2: $100 (due June 4, 2019)
  • Roundtrip airfare: $1,855 (estimated; taxes and fuel surcharges can increase up until tickets are paid in full)
    • Paid to the travel agency (credit cards accepted):
      • Deposit: $150 (due May 3, 2019)
      • Remaining Balance (due by 12pm May 10, 2019)


Failure to pay the billable costs in full by the due dates listed above may lead to withdrawal from the program. All payments are non-refundable once they have been submitted. In the case of airfare payments, a refund may be possible (less the cost of a ticket change fee) if an alternate student is available to participate.

Non-billable costs

Total estimated non-billable costs for Japan travel: approximately* $535

  • Spending money (estimated): $400
  • Passport (estimated): $135

*These costs will vary depending on personal spending habits and whether or not you already have a passport.

Part 1 - Shiga portion

June 26: Depart from Michigan

June 27: Arrive in Shiga

June 28: Sightseeing, beginning of homestay

June 29 - Jul 12: Homestay, attending Shiga high school

July 12: Farewell party

July 13: Depart from Shiga, arrive in Michigan

Part 2 - Michigan portion

August 28: Shiga students depart from Japan, arrive in Michigan

August 29: Shiga students sightsee in Lansing, beginning of homestay

August 30 - September 13: Homestay, attending high school with Shiga students

September 14: Farewell party

September 15: Shiga students depart from Michigan

September 16: Shiga students arrive in Japan
