MSU Joint MA TESOL

Students can complete the MSU MA TESOL degree through the Japan Center for Michigan Universities. Anyone interested should contact both Charlene Polio (polio(at)msu.edu) and Christopher Garth (cgarth(at)jcmu.org) and then apply through the regular MSU graduate admissions portal. Non-credit seminars may be available for professionals in the field.

Summer 2023

  • Introduction to Instructed Second Language Acquisition: This two-week course examines how second language learning and teaching occurs in various traditional and non-traditional classroom contexts. The course focuses on the theoretical underpinnings of pedagogical perspectives, so that L2 teachers and learners will better understand how to facilitate L2 development. Taught by Shawn Loewen. 
    • Cost: 
      • ¥200,000 (for non-credit option; not including housing)
      • MSU Standard in-state Tuition for 3-credit course (for degree-seeking option; not including housing)

    • Deadline: June 19, 2023 (June 9, 2023 for those needing JCMU-sponsored visa)

Program Details

  • Length: Varies by term; Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer
  • Credits: Varies by term;
    • Fall / Spring: minimum of 3 credits up to 9 credits per semester
    • Summer Institutes/Seminars: 3 to 12 credits (with some courses available as a non-credit seminar for non-degree seeking professionals)
  • Location(s): Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
  • Housing: JCMU Residence Hall (available for an additional housing fee for those who to apply to participate in-person at JCMU)
  • Prerequisites:
    • For Graduate Credit: Admission to the MSU TESOL MA Degree program
    • As Non-Credit Seminar: Varies by seminar; Typically professional experience in fields of second language acquisition and/or second language instruction.
