Program Description

  • (4 credits) Religion and Society in Japan: This program will explore the variety of ways in which “religion” pervades and functions in Japan today. We will begin by appreciating how the concept of religion (in the sense of a religious tradition) has never fit easily in Japan, and will adopt a more flexible approach to observing diverse ritual behaviors, modes of self-cultivation, community bonds, and means of value transmission that may or may not be labeled “religious.” Together, we will explore “religion” in society, especially the different roles that it plays for various communities within a web of socio-economic, ethnic, caste, and other diversities. By also focusing on social and ethnic diversity in Japan, students’ will gain a broader view beyond the clunky concept “religion,” to understand the variety of ways in humans organize their societies, minds, emotions, bodies, and communities.
